We’ve all heard about incidents where police were asked not to bring guns into coffee shops and restaurants, we’ve also heard that Starbucks has asked gun owners not to bring their guns to their stores unless they are law enforcement. Perhaps Starbucks should oversee the Entz Elementary School in Mesa.
The school said the officer took “the discussion the wrong way”, his department says to let it go. There is no misinterpretation about being told not to wear your uniform, it’s pretty clear. The Coolidge Police Department is correct, let it go. You can’t change what happened, no one got hurt and hopefully someone will learn from it. Or will they?
Every week there seems to be an issue with the concept of zero tolerance, using airsoft guns in your yard, pretending your finger is a gun and now, being a cop with a kid. I don’t know where the line is, I really don’t, but it’s got to be well thought out and the person making the decision needs to be strong enough to handle the backlash from either side. Giving in to fear and peer pressure is not going to improve a situation, it will only cause it to go viral and create more controversy and backlash. We rarely hear of the instances of a school meting out a reasonable punishment because it’s just that, reasonable, acceptable and not news-worthy.
Whomever coined the phrase Zero Tolerance, should have given it a bit more thought, people are quick to hide behind the Zero and ignore the Tolerance. Perhaps it should be Reasonable Tolerance.
